The result, more often than not, is a line bent out of shape to reach a word that was never really right for it. The rhyme arrives, but something has been lost on the way — a slightly wrong word, a syntax that had to twist, a meaning that had to yield to sound.

Prerequisite: The Interior Method

But end rhyme only does one thing. It closes.

The Dueling Constraint asks a different question: what if the position of the rhyme were itself a formal decision — one made deliberately, couplet by couplet, to serve the argument?

But end-rhyme carries a cost.

The final word of every line must simultaneously carry meaning, carry emphasis, carry closure, and satisfy the sound pattern. That’s four jobs for one position. The result, in weaker poems, is the familiar distortion: syntax bent toward the rhyme, the almost-right word chosen because it fits, the line that ends on the word the form needed rather than the word the poem deserved.
